The Premier Release of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Claims the Number One Spot.

Initially, this work may look closer to a challenging scholarly challenge than the latest pop record from a musician whose previous hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop star. Broken across 4 distinct parts and sung in 13 tongues, it is a head-spinning classical-tinged opus that delves into female mystique, spiritual ascent, and bodily transformation, frequently through the lens of different women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme treated with grounded openness elsewhere—is launched heavenward here, buoyed by the lush sound of a full orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive list of collaborators. The pure daring by itself makes the efforts of other artists seem quite modest.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

That Lux manages to transcend overly academic posturing feels nearly a miracle, and full praise going to the artist. While this is not the first time album to alchemize historical sounds with the present, its ambitions are much higher on Lux, with the balancing act far more precarious. The element that truly raises this fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of joy. Much like the legendary Björk during her height, there is a captivating sense to Rosalía's voice which sweeps the listener into its tornado. Even when she is tearing hearts apart, the listener nevertheless desire to be alongside her for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant spirit comes forth clearly during a stunning piano-led song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over several moments. Suddenly, all the music falls away, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a declaration prior to a comically over-the-top string crescendo crashes down like cartoonish force. The song immediately segues to the wild track driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo role from none other than herself.

"The charm of this album is that you rarely exactly understand—or even wish to know—where you is going next."

Almost each song finishes in a completely different place than how it started. A track examines the transient nature of celebrity with a delicate orchestration before collapsing in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing her previous rhythmic style begins off moody and brooding, featuring prowling vocals, until sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften its jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Pop

Another crucial achievement of the album involves navigating the gap between radical experimentation and broad appeal. This is little coincidence that it has become the artist's first work to crack the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a suite of truly catchy hits. A song performed primarily in the English language swells on a refrain that seems to gather more and more infectious melodies while it spins upward. This feat gets repeated on a different expansive ballad that grows and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces with its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural impact of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating a former partner described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the singing carry a sharp smile, like a fairy-tale figure concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux is pop on a maximalist level, an ambitious reach for high Art in an era of looming artificial sameness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime elevation, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully manages its built-in excess. This is an abundant well of buried gems that requires patience to completely explore but doesn't feels like a chore. Where some big releases of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a lavish feast at which the guests at the table, some tipsy on holy wine, flutter from discussions about historical saints, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common gossip about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from music's most endlessly inventive visionary.
